Played in the Med School-Law School softball tournament today.  Played poorly (1-5, 1 rbi).  Team lost.  Took lots of pictures.

So - let’s make use of that comment button.  What are your 3 favorite shots from my gallery? 

10 games in (for most of the league) seems a good place to analyze the start of the young season.  1/16 of the season has been played - roughly the equivalent of the first weekend of the NFL sked.

First thought - opening day at Busch was fun, but cheezey.  With a capital Z.  Totally worth going, but if I had been one of the people who had to buy from a broker or ebay at ridiculously inflated prices, I’d have been very upset.  Worth the price of the ballgame, plus maybe a bit of a premium, but not what it’s all cracked up to be.

Next - I was hoping Mark Prior would tease Cubs fans a bit more than this, but he wasn’t even able to make it out of extended spring training without sustaining his annual injury.  Only time will tell if this one’s season-ending, but hopefully he’ll come back for a disastrous game or two before going down for the count.

Jeff Weaver is still Jeff Weaver.  I suspect he may have been replaced by a look-a-like during the playoffs last year.   Good to see him return to true form - for another team.

In "honor" of Jackie Robinson, what started as a limited event where certain players were granted permission to wear his retired number has gotten completely out-of-hand.  Entire teams will be donning the 42 - including the Cards.  Ugh!  For the record, however, the firestorm over this issue has at least accomplished its purpose - Jackie Robinson is back in the public mind where he belongs as being one of the great figures in the civil rights movement.

If Barry Bonds hits a home run, and no one is there to see it, does anyone really care?  Hank Aaron doesn’t, and won’t be present if and when Bonds breaks the career record.  Good for him.

D-Backs.  Yuck.

Tigers and Cards, at the tops of their divisions.  Tigers with few questions, Cards with many.  My favorite quote of the season?  When asked if his team could be the Tigers of this season (referring to bad-to-great turnaround), the Indians’ manager said that the biggest obstacle to becoming this year’s Tigers is "beating this year’s Tigers."

The Tigers of Detroit once traded away one of their catchers.

In return, they got the infamous "player to be named later."

Several weeks later, the catcher was sent back to the Tigers as the player to be named.

More amazingly, he is not the only example of a baseball player to be traded for himself. 

 Update: there seems to be some discrepancy on this one.  Some believe that it was actually Cleveland that traded this player to the Mets, but looking at his official stats, it appears he never played for Cleveland, and the year of the trade (1972) he was playing for Detroit.

Huh.
